When Eastern Gateway Community College decided to expand their Youngstown campus due to growing enrollment, the former East Ohio Gas Building served as the ideal location. With its large, open first floor – formerly the payment lobby – and expansive corner windows that flooded the space with natural light, it would serve as a spacious and inspiring learning environment.
As construction progressed, decorative plaster friezes and columns were discovered throughout the first floor, entombed during previous renovations. The owners agreed to celebrate the history of this structure by preserving those elements and incorporating them into the design.
While upholding the historic integrity of the structure, the project team also transformed it into a 21st Century college building. We worked with the technology consultant to integrate state-of-the-art technology into each classroom, accommodating distance learning while enhancing the experience for students attending in-person.
